ATHENS TRIO:

LISTENING IMBUES WHAT IS HEARD WITH IDENTITY

David Louis Zuckerman is an American composer and artist based in New York. He was invited to live and work in Athens at Ύλη[matter]HYLE for the months of August and September. Due to the pandemic’s remaining travel restrictions, his travel from the U.S proved impossible and instead he decided to create a number of musical compositions for a trio of string instruments to be performed live in Athens by local musicians.

In particular for David Louis Zuckerman: "A gesture, which at first appeared too simple and in need of development, after some weeks suddenly begins to look complex, and inversely, spaces of complexity grow less daunting. At a certain stage in this process of shifting awareness all conceptual categories are eradicated, and you can begin to see, with clarity, what remains as a possible music. I am already with you and what travels now without a passport, it is a revolt."

This event also celebrates Ύλη[matter]HYLE’s five years of activities and its newly legal status as a non profit organisation.

About 'Υλη[matter]HYLE:

The word matter in greek is pronounced like hyle. 'Υλη[matter]HYLE (they/them) were initiated in 2013 by visual artist Georgia Sagri with the vision of creating an open studio where issues of care and social empathy amongst her peers in the local and international art scenes could emerge. It is a semi-public / semi-private space in the center of Athens that aims to bring together art, politics and sciences as if their coexistence is a new undisciplined field of thought, action and living. Its character anchors to a feminist approach that aims to challenge authoritarian and patriarchical modes of living as well as binary relational constructions such as public vs private; personal vs political. Situated in an apartment in a central transit node at Omonia Square it shapes working, personal and communal living space, while it acts as an intimate relational source for the growing artistic community of local and international friends and peers. Its maintenance is collective and sustained by the artists, writers, researchers, poets, and organizers, who also contribute with their practices, in an expanded sense. Collaborators share time, reflect, work or even do nothing at Ύλη[matter]HYLE, and through these processes they form the space’s public program and challenge their work.
